Castien’s unsent letter to Wren

Please be aware that the following letter should only be read after finishing Ocean of Ink. Do not read this before then.

My dearest Wren,

I understand your hesitation to accept compliments on your Gift. Know that it is not only your words that capture my attention, but you, yourself.

You travelled across a perilous sea and now live on an island surrounded by monsters. All to carry on your brother’s legacy. That is much more valuable than your script alone.

With that clarification made, I am inclined to petition that your strength and your experiences show in the use of your Gift. I read your words, and I see a warrior. A fighter with a quill as her weapon.

As for your inquiry, no, I do not wish to be parted from my Gift, for all its faults. I cannot see myself without it. Perhaps that is a harmful mindset, but it is the one I have. It is a part of me that I would not want to lose.

We are more than our Gifts, my dear storyteller, but such Gifts are tools we can use. To combat the darkness. To fight for our legacy. To live.

You invited me to walk the shore with you. Now I will ask, would you fight with me?

Yours,

Castien

Ps. If your price is more letters from me, then I shall never stop writing. The ink smudge we share will be branded upon my skin.
